Zander's review

For many, Thriller is Michael Jackson’s greatest album. And for good reason! What a crazy culmination of brilliant minds. Quincy Jones is cooking. Michael Jackson. Paul McCartney! And the goat Greg Phillanganes is playing keys all over this album.

Although this is an 80s album, it’s not overly 80s like Bad can be at times. Which I really appreciate. The acoustic drum kit sounds great. The keys sounds are tasteful. And of course Michael’s voice and phrasing are awesome.

Maybe I underrate this album a bit because of how popular many of these tracks are. But it is in fact my 2nd favorite MJ album. I do prefer Off The Wall.

Wanna Be Startin Something is a great opening track. I really like Baby Be Mine. The Girl is Mine is fun, but kind of sad to listen to after the falling out between MJ and Paul McCartney (I’m on Paul’s side).

Then the massive hits. Thriller is of course good. Beat it and Billy Jean are also timeless. Cant not mention the EVH solo on Beat It. My father in law would be upset if I forgot.

The thing about those three tracks, although great, is that I’ve heard them each one billion times. So I feel like I often opt to skip them when they come up.

The final 3 tracks on the album however are possibly the 3 best! Human Nature is a banger! Written by Toto and gifted to Michael. PYT is good. And possibly the best track on the album is Lady in My Life. So underrated.

This album is pretty much the definition of a no skip album (even though I explained why I skip some of them). No truly weak tracks. The one that could be considered weak is The Girl is Mine, but I do actually like that song.

Every single one of the big 3 Michael Jackson albums is a banger. This happens to be my second favorite. Go MJ.

About the record

Thriller is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson. It was released on November 29, 1982, through Epic Records. It was produced by Quincy Jones, who produced Jackson's previous album, Off the Wall (1979). Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a budget of $750,000. With an ongoing backlash against disco, Jackson transitioned his sound, with Thriller primarily featuring post-disco and synth-pop among various influences ranging from funk to rock, while its themes include paranoia, romance, and social consciousness. Paul McCartney appears as the first credited featured artist on a Jackson album.
